Current employment levels in the forest industry are estimated at 83,400 by Australian Government Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Australia (DAFF). It has been estimated that during the next 20 years, 40,000 new jobs could be created in the timber plantation sector in Australia.

This will occur if the total plantation area is increased to generate critical mass and if world scale, internationally competitive industries are established to process the wood produced in Australia.

Growing, harvesting, transporting and processing timber requires highly skilled people. As the plantation resource within a region expands and new timber processing facilities are established, job numbers could increase dramatically.

In addition to direct plantation jobs, many other people find employment in providing services to the plantation sector and in manufacturing wood products. The vast majority of these jobs are in regional areas, and are vital to help stop the steady decline of Australia’s regional communities.
